A Magical alternative that is just a great text expander
Many people installed Magical for one thing: type a short shortcut, get a template. If you want that back — fast, simple and without signing in — PhraseBolt imports your Magical shortcuts and keeps working the same way.
Why people look for a Magical alternative
Magical grew from a text expander into an AI automation product. That is great if you want an AI agent, but many long-time users only need dependable text shortcuts, and reviews on the Chrome Web Store show frustration with changes, sign-in requirements and features moving around. If your workflow is “type //intro, fill the name, send”, a focused text expander is easier to trust.
What you keep when you switch to PhraseBolt
- Shortcuts that expand as you type, in Gmail, LinkedIn, Outlook on the web, help desks and CRMs.
- Variables: Magical-style
{{first_name}}become PhraseBolt fill-in fields, so you get a small form with a live preview before the text is inserted. - Dates and the clipboard:
{date},{date:MMM D +3d},{clipboard}, and{cursor}to decide where the caret lands. - Search: press Ctrl+Shift+Space when you forget a shortcut.

How to move your Magical shortcuts (2 minutes)
- In Magical, open its settings and use the export option to download your shortcuts as a CSV file. (If your version has no export, select your templates and copy them into a spreadsheet with two columns: shortcut and text.)
- Install PhraseBolt and open the dashboard → Import & export.
- Choose Magical, pick the file and check the preview. Variables like
{{first_name}}are shown converted to{first_name}. - Click Import. Shortcuts that clash with existing ones get a number (e.g.
;sig2) unless you tick “replace”.
Import is part of Pro, and the 7-day free trial (no card) covers it — enough time to migrate and decide.
Keep Magical’s short-prefix habit
Magical users often start shortcuts with //. That works in PhraseBolt too; any shortcut that begins with a symbol expands immediately, while shortcuts that begin with a letter only fire at the start of a word, so btw never triggers inside “subtwo”.
FAQ
- Will my Magical shortcuts work the same?
- Shortcuts, text and {{variables}} import directly. AI and automation features have no equivalent in PhraseBolt because it never sends your text anywhere.
- Do I need to create an account?
- No. PhraseBolt has no account system. A Pro license key from Lemon Squeezy is the only thing you ever paste.
- Can I use both during the switch?
- Yes, but give them different shortcuts or turn one off, otherwise both may try to expand the same text.
