Using a text expander in Google Docs
Honest answer first: Google Docs is the one popular editor where typed shortcuts cannot be replaced reliably by any Chrome extension. Here is why, and the fast workaround.
Why Docs is different
Since 2021 Google Docs renders the page on a canvas. The letters you see are pixels, not text in the web page, so an extension cannot see the shortcut you just typed or replace it. Extensions that claim otherwise depend on Google’s add-on APIs or break when Docs updates.
The workaround: search, copy, paste
- In Docs, press Ctrl+Shift+Space (⌘⇧Space on Mac).
- Type a word from the snippet and press Enter. Fill in the form if it has fields.
- PhraseBolt copies the finished text and shows “Copied — press Ctrl+V”. Paste.
It is two keystrokes more than typing a shortcut, and you still get dates, fill-ins and nested snippets.
Everywhere else it is instant
Gmail, Google Sheets cells and comments, Google Forms, Slack, LinkedIn, CRMs and help desks are normal web editors — shortcuts expand as you type.
FAQ
- Will this improve?
- If Google offers an official way to insert text into Docs from extensions, PhraseBolt will use it. Until then the palette workaround is the reliable option.
